Santiago. While in the municipality of Sosúa they mobilized yesterday to request the closure of the dump, in Villa González and Navarrete they demand to control the dense smoke that the dump gives off, a condition that affects the health of residents.
The representatives of community organizations, priests, pastors, cultural entities protested with a large concentration to demand the definitive closure of the Sosúa landfill in the province of Puerto Plata.
During the demonstration, representatives of the Sosúa neighborhood associations, the Federation of Puerto Plata Neighborhood Associations, and the truckers union gathered at the baseball and softball stadium of the La Unión community, and demanded the right to life and health. Among those who demand a definitive solution is the priest Juan Luis Díaz Bonilla, priest of the San Juan Bautista parish, who denounced that as a consequence of the smoke, the community must put on masks.
Other landfills
Meanwhile, due to the lack of control and maintenance of the landfill where the town halls of the municipalities of Villa Bisonó (Navarrete) and Villa González deposit, caused it to catch fire again. The dense smoke that emerges from the open-air dump that has been operating for several years in the vicinity of the Las Lavas community affects the residents of surrounding communities.
The same occurs in the landfill shared by the municipal districts of Hato del Yaque and La Canela, a space used for raising cows that swarm in the midst of intense smoke. According to the divers, mostly of Haitian nationality, the fire started on Saturday night. Despite the problem of the flames, members of the fire team are not observed trying to put out the smoke.

In the case of the Hato del Yaque and La Canela landfill, the limitations of its district authorities have made it impossible to control the smoke that is constantly generated. The landfill is among 11 deposits that require intervention in communities in the province of Santiago and that have remained in a deadlock and only promises of support from the central government.
