OnCubaNews

The Provincial Health Directorate (DPS) in Las Tunas reported on Monday the femicide of a worker at the Mártires de Las Tunas pediatric hospital, located in the provincial capital.

The victim is named Arianny Benita Chávez Puche and worked on the telephone board.

According to the institution’s note, Chávez Puche was attacked during her work shift by her ex-partner, who killed her with a knife in the early hours of the morning of February 27.

“Subsequently, the perpetrator committed suicide,” says the information collected by the Local newspaper on their social networks.

The outlet recalls that “femicides constitute the maximum expression of gender violence and are usually associated with previous situations of gender violence; they are rarely the result of momentary outbursts”.

The Femicide Observatory of the independent platforms I do believe you in Cuba and taut wings they had recorded 13 femicides in 2023 before this event.

Also from Facebook, users like the journalist Claudia Padrón report that with the murder of Arianny Chávez there are 15 femicides this year.

These groups have called for effective mechanisms to prevent gender violence “so as not to reach its extreme manifestation, which is irreparable.”

He is 50, she was 17

The activists demand a law against gender violence and criticize the Cuban government for not expressly classifying femicide as a crime in the new Penal Code, which came into force last December, despite the fact that it contemplates gender-based violence.
