The US government formalized its request for the extradition of Ovidio Guzmán López, son of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, to be presented before the Federal Court of Washington on charges of criminal association with the purpose of distributing drugs in that country.
Sources from the security cabinet indicated that, in accordance with the bilateral treaty on the matter, the request was received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) and forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), who must deliver it to Judge Gregorio Salazar Hernández. , to officially notify Guzmán López, The mousein a hearing to be held at the justice center attached to the Federal Center for Social Readaptation No. 1, in Almoloya, state of Mexico, where he is being held.
The process will take several months, since the defendant can resort to the amparo seeking to delay his delivery to US justice. This is an option to which he is entitled, although it is generally rejected by the jurisdictional authorities.
Ovidio Guzmán was captured on January 5 during an operation by federal forces in Culiacán, Sinaloa, and is accused, along with some of his brothers, of having assumed control of his father’s cartel.
The US authorities offered, in December 2021, a reward of 20 million dollars for his capture.
The federal court that requires it issued a provisional arrest warrant for extradition purposes against Guzmán López on July 6, 2018, whom he points out as responsible for a cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana trafficking network from Mexico to the United States. .
