If they understood them, even a little…

Gatos, animales afectivos

Havana Cuba. – Another rooster would crow if we humans knew affectionate animals better, if we understood them, if we cared for them even a little. Perhaps with our help they would be a little happier, but each time it costs a lot, and more, to understand those things that have to do with love and justice, and much more if it is about animals, and even worse if the matter is about cats.

Cats have a bad reputation and not a few assume that they have earned it. Many say that they are nothing more than a bunch of thieves, but that bad notoriety is not so deserved. That bad reputation of cats often comes from the wickedness of their detractors. Who has never heard that cats are thieves? Cats could be, in the kingdom of domestic animals, “the children of the mischievous”.

It is true that they are very adept at stealing a sandwich if they are hungry. And what else could some of them do not to die? What could be better than watching and waiting for the best moment? Many things are said about cats; they are said to be independent, so autonomous that they embarrass us, so free that they embarrass us.

Cats enjoy their independence, and their good looks prove it. Cats do not even need to be groomed, they are capable of cleaning their little bodies on their own. Who can be sure that a cat stinks? Who hasn’t seen them purging their bodies with unusual skills?

And despite all this, they turn their backs on them and even insult them, even forgetting the love, fidelity and tenderness that they dedicate to their “owners”, to those whom they wait behind the door showing the joys that the reunion brings. The cats wait to sit in the armchair of “their human” to lick the neck of the recently arrived “master” from the top of that piece of furniture.

The cat melts into cuddling and tenderness to celebrate the reunion, and it repeats it every day, and without getting tired, but sometimes they are not reciprocated. Undoubtedly, that is why I was wondering about the things he will feel when “the master” does not return, when days and days go by and he does not return, and he is hungry, and he even stops recognizing the house that was sheltering him as his, because he no longer perceives the smells of “his master”, because that house is no longer his house, because his family left and he does not understand anything about it. exiles to the north nor anywhere.

And in these cases, many cats decide to leave the house, because the house is for them the coexistence with “their human”. And there are not a few cats that abandon the comforts of the house to live under a kill-winner-battles, and from there they look at the house they once had; but they don’t enter, they just wait, and sometimes a lot, and then they are branded as lazy. And it is that cats also have a little heart, and they love, and they miss, and they have multiple hungers, and they are anguished, and they wait for their human until they die.

And that desolation has become a common place in today’s Cuba, if I know it… It’s just that this last exile, as well as the others, has left lots of pets completely helpless. A lot of pets; dogs, cats, birds, have been left alone and “the good of God.” And that happened to a cat from my neighborhood that I don’t even know the name of, the only thing I know is that he lived in the house of a woman who went north.

The woman made a long path through the jungle and the poor boy left the house and chose the shade of a battle-winning bush as shelter, as if he suspected that in this new battle, this time against loneliness, the bush would bring him a bit of comfort. protection, some comfort and peace. And there, sheltered by the battle-winner, the desolate, the helpless spend the hours. And he looks at the house that he had before, but he doesn’t want to live with those strangers who inhabit it today.

That is no longer your home and its inhabitants are not your family. The cat has had to start a new life, without a home, and in the midst of loneliness and heartbreak. And every morning, and also in the afternoon, I get him something to eat, because his faithfulness and his sadness move me. I think that the fact that he chose a battle-winning plant is more than a coincidence. That bush, “his tool at hand”, is the place from where he looks at his house, and he waits and waits. That waits?

He hopes to live with his human family again. Maybe that’s why I think that, like the cat, many of us walk around, watching over the usual house from afar, sheltered by a bush of battle-winners. I suspect that we all walk, like that cat, watching the house; from Havana, from Santiago de Cuba, from Matanzas and Santa Clara, from Madrid and Miami, from any end of the world, from all exiles, from exiles.

From all those points, from our battle-winning bushes, from our shelters, we wait, we watch, for the best moment. From our battle-winning bushes we wait for the moment to recover everyone’s house, the one that was stolen from us more than 60 years ago. We wait in the shade of a tree that protects us from the damage caused by the sun, the rain, the strong winds, and the lack of love that communism imposed on us.

This is how we take shelter, and leave the house so as not to look at the communist destruction. That’s how we lost our houses, our houses, our battle-winners. That’s how we lost them, when we should have defended them. The cat looks at his house from the protection offered by a bush, and I brought him some food so that he can resist, so that he has strength and can tell the other cats that they could win all the battles and reconquer the house they always have now. its “owners”, without a doubt it is only a question of unity, a “mere health question”, would say Virgilio Piñera.
