Colombian Foreign Ministry plans to reopen several consulates in Venezuela in four months

The Colombian Attorney General’s Office issued an alert that the consular representation was failing in Venezuela after restarting relations. This led the Foreign Ministry to announce a plan so that, in a first phase of four months, the teams would be reactivated in various locations to serve Colombians residing in Venezuelan territory.


The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Relations announced the reopening of several consulates in Venezuela, after the Attorney General’s Office of that country warned that there was a lack of operation of these instances after the resumption of relations between Bogotá and Caracas.

Since 2019, when relations between the two nations broke down after the attempt to enter humanitarian aid from Cúcuta in an activity led by the then interim president, Juan Guaidó, recognized by the government of the moment incarnated by President Iván Duque, the more than four Millions of Colombians residing in Venezuela were left without consular assistance.

According to the magazine Weekthe Attorney General’s Office indicated that there is a plan from the Colombian Foreign Ministry so that, within a maximum period of four months, the consular offices of the neighboring country in Caracas, Maracaibo, San Antonio de Táchira and San Cristóbal will resume operation, while work is carried out. to adapt and maintain the facilities that were abandoned.

He revealed that priority is also given in the Foreign Ministry to appoint consuls and hire administrative personnel for the reopening of these instances in Venezuela as soon as possible.

This also includes contracting and adapting the headquarters of other Colombian consulates in Venezuela such as those located in Puerto Ayacucho, Puerto Ordaz, Valencia, El Amparo and San Fernando de Atabapo, which will materialize in a second phase not yet defined.

It was already known that there was the promise that the Consulate of colombia in Venezuela it would open its doors in February. However, they had some difficulties to face because there are 16 jobs there and only three have been assigned to cover the functions.

Another problem is that the facilities are so deteriorated that the diplomatic representation cannot yet be installed; repairs that need to be done and that also costs money.

TO mid december, Ambassador Armando Benedetti told Caracol Radio that no consulate is still working after several months of reestablishing relations between the two countries.
