The twentieth edition of the Santiago Álvarez International Documentary Festival In Memoriam will begin in Santiago de Cuba on March 3. 17 documentaries are announced in competition.
According to the Organizing Committee, the works presented are characterized by their diversity of language. Several directors will discuss research processes, production, realization and documentary exhibition circuits.
After editions without being done in person due to the pandemic, this edition of the event confirms the interest in defending the permanence of this type of forum, according to the organizers.
Throughout two decades the festival has endorsed the exhibition and discussion around the documentary, and constituted a space to give relevance to works that address a diversity of aspects of political, social and cultural life from different latitudes.

This year, seven documentaries have music as their central axis, delving into the lives and works of creators and groups such as Van Van, Silvio Rodríguez, Gerardo Alfonso, Los muñequitos de Matanzas and the Steel Band del Cobre, from Santiago de Cuba.
Other works reflect the family environment and the experiences during the pandemic, as well as the work of the Salesian missionaries in Uganda to welcome those fleeing the war in South Sudan.
According to the organizers, the documentaries that will be screened show various trends in contemporary audiovisual production, as well as a diversity of styles and languages.
