Alejandro Toledo: Judge schedules hearing for this Monday on suspension of extradition

The judge of the California Court, Laurel Bauer, scheduled for this Monday the hearing in which she will evaluate the request of former president Alejandro Toledo to keep his extradition process suspended, which was approved by the United States government.

Bauer today hosted a brief public hearing involving Rebecca Haciski, a representative of the US Department of Justice, and Tamara Crepet, Toledo’s newly assigned public defender.

Hearing held today via Zoom.

In that proceeding, Crepet required rescheduling the hearing and maintaining the suspension of extradition until the magistrate makes a decision. The judge granted the request.

The ex-president’s extradition was suspended by court order since last year, at the request of the former president, until all the appeals filed by Toledo were resolved.

However, and now that the Department of State has approved the repatriation of the former head of state, accused of receiving bribes from the Odebrecht company, the Public Ministry of that country asked the justice system to order his arrest in order to guarantee his arrival at the Peru.

According to the Peruvian Prosecutor’s Office, Toledo received US$35 million in bribes from Odebrecht in exchange for granting him the construction of the Interocéanica Sur highway during his government (2001-2006).
