In an interview with Radio Panama, Angel Delgado of the Panama Fire Department, gave details about the fire that started at night on Wednesday, February 22, in the tire storage area in Cerro Patacón.
According to Delgado, the emergency call was given at 9:45 p.m. informing that there was a fire in the tire storage area. Upon arrival at the place, a huge number of burned tires could be observed and the extinction work was started. They have performed all night.
The tire dump is near the entrance to Cerro Patacón and is a distant area from where the fire broke out last week.
The work of the firefighters has consisted of throwing foam concentrates and using machinery to pour earth in the area of the fire and to make points called firewalls to contain the fire.
Part of the entrance road to Cerro Patacón was closed as a precaution and it was revealed that a new contingent of firefighters arrived at 4:00 in the morning to have fresh personnel to relieve the members of the Red Shirts who already had hours fighting this sinister.
It should be noted that many people travel in this sector in search of things of value and it is not ruled out that one of these people could start the fire.
For Delgado, the main thing right now is to contain the fire in this tire dump and the safety of the personnel who are in the area due to the toxic smoke emanating from the place.
