Senator warns the border is open to human trafficking

Senador advierte la frontera está abierta a la trata de personas

There is no border control and the government endangers national sovereignty because it handles the Dominican-Haitian issue with populism. This was stated yesterday by the spokesperson for the Dominican Liberation Party in the Senate of the Republic, Yván Lorenzo.

The opposition senator cited as an example that, in October 2022, the ruler assured that the border was armored and that he had technological equipment that allowed them to biometrically recognize members of Haitian gangs such as the “400 Mawozo”.

“However, in December Interpol apprehended Lerby Belus, member of this dangerous gang in La Romana. Now in Duvergé they have just arrested members of a Haitian gang. All of this shows that there is no border control,” said Lorenzo.

The congressman from the border province of Elías Piña recalled that he submitted a resolution long ago to investigate what the Public Ministry does with everything that had to do with human trafficking, especially Haitians, because after Luis Abinader came to power, there is not a single case investigated for this matter.

“Everything that has to do with human trafficking and undocumented and illegal Haitian nationals is the big business of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) government. They never reach the Public Ministry because they are negotiated by the officials of the Government of Luis Abinaderespecially those that have to do with migration,” he revealed.

He warned that human trafficking and undocumented Haitians are entering in droves, without any strict immigration control at the border.

The swamps

On the other hand, the PLD congressman criticized the ceding of land, especially mangroves, to Haiti with the construction of the border fence. “This should call our attention because too much land is being ceded to Haiti and this government cannot continue ceding part of its sovereignty,” he concluded.
