British culture, celebrating in Havana

OnCubaNews

The tenth edition of the british culture week in Cuba had its beginning this Tuesday in Havana.

A parade of classic cars United Kingdom to the historic center of Havana and the inauguration of a graphic design exhibition in Plaza Vieja, drew the curtain on the day, which will last until next Sunday, February 26, and will include various activities and artistic presentations.

The exhibition, exhibited in the colorful public environment of the square, was the highlight of the opening of the week, whose opening remarks were given by Sir George Hollingbery, British ambassador to Cuba.

In the show, nine Cuban designers —among them Nelson Ponce, Raupa González, Miguel Monkc, Lyly Díaz and Idania del Río— dialogue with British culture from different registers and authorial perspectives.

The works, printed on large canvases, will remain on display on balconies throughout the cultural day.

For this Wednesday, at 6:00 pm, another exhibition is scheduled to open at the Taller Gorría Gallery in the well-known San Isidro neighborhood. In it, the British artist Freya Hollingbery and the Cuban Elio Jesús will exhibit pieces made of recycled materials, in the show entitled remains of the day.

Music and theater will also play a leading role in British Culture Week. Thanks to this, the group Real Projet will pay tribute to the anthological album Youyou beby The Beatles, based on their own sound, this Thursday at the Teatro Martí.

A day later the play will have its premiere mary for mary, based on the life of the writer and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft. The presentations, under the direction of Liliana Lam, will take place from Friday to Sunday, at 7:30 pm, at the Cuban Art Factory.

Also in the coming days there will also be launches of audiovisual materials for children and young people; a festival of the English language, with games, contests and songs; a guided visit to the residence of the British Ambassador in Havana; and a Cuban version of the British “pub crawl”, in four bars in Old Havana.

The cultural day will close its activities on Sunday night, with a concert by the singer and percussionist Brenda Navarrete, at the Cuban Art Factory.

The Week of British Culture in Cuba is organized by the Embassy of that country on the island, with the collaboration of institutions such as the Ministry of Culture, the Cinematheque of Cuba and the Office of the Historian of Havana. In addition, it is sponsored by Ron Santiago and the Johnnie Walker whiskey brand.
