PLD deplora destrucción de manglares por construcción de muro fronterizo

Santo Domingo.- The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) deplored the destruction of thousands of meters of mangroves within a protected area, as well as other species for the construction of the border wall in the Monte Cristi province.

Through declarations of its owner, Alfonso Urenathe environmentalists of the PLD echo the complaint of the Coalition for the Defense of Protected Areas, who at a press conference presented the destructions supported by aerial shots captured with the use of drones.

“Things happen without any kind of consequence regimes. Who authorized this layout of the wall? Who authorized the destruction of a protected area? Who from the Ministry of the Environment has the responsibility of supervising this work? Ureña holder of Environment and Natural Resources of the PLD.

He considers that the lack of powers to carry out compliance with Law 64-00 is becoming more and more evident, and now even worse, violating protection agreements.

The complaint states a potential loss of more than 600,000 square meters of Dominican soil, which would remain isolated between the border line, which leads Alfonso Ureña to affirm that these lands “in the long run or in the short run, will be invaded to be populated as as has happened at other points on the international highway where there are Haitian settlements on the Dominican Republic side.”

This Wednesday it was confirmed that for the construction of the border wall in a protected area there was no environmental impact study.

The PLD regrets the inaction of the Minister of the Environment, a body that must condemn and take action on this situation that threatens the natural resources of the Dominican Republic.
