The Penal Forum registered 26 new political prisoners during 2022. 13 of these people were accused of alleged “conspiracy”, nine of the arrests occurred in the context of demonstrations and four for “public management”
The NGO Foro Penal affirmed this Tuesday the 21st that 269 political prisoners are registered in Venezuela, one less compared to its previous count, released on February 7.
In an image posted on his Twitter account, The organization indicated that, of the 269 cases recorded, 256 are men and 13 are women. In addition, 119 are civilians and 150 are military personnel of different ranks.
Of the total, only 115 have been convicted and 154 are still awaiting a court ruling.

The last release corresponds to that of Antonio Garbia young man arrested in Carabobo state in June 2015 after being accused of the death of a National Guard captain, which occurred during the anti-government protests of 2014, known as “La Salida”.
Garbi was released by a Carabobo court on February 16, after seven years and eight months in prison, after requesting the procedural benefits that corresponded to him for full compliance. He got full freedom.
On February 12, the organization assured that, in 2022, “a total of 26 arrests for political purposes were reported,” 25 of these against civilians, three of them women, and one against a retired military officer.
Regarding the reason for the arrests, Foro Penal stressed that 13 of them were for acts associated with “conspiracy”, nine occurred in the context of demonstrations and four for “public management”.
The NGO urged the Nicolás Maduro regime to “respect the request of the international community and organizations that defend human rights, regarding the cessation of violations of the civil and political rights of citizens, to put an end to persecution and repression and that the “political prisoners that exist in Venezuela” be released.
