The District Mayor’s Office and the National Drug Council agree to provide support to homeless people

With the purpose of creating a strategic alliance to address the people in street condition and that require assistance for addiction to the use of psychoactive substances, the Mayor’s Office of the National District (ADN) and the National Drug Council (CND) signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement that also creates a working table.

In a ceremony held at the Palacio Consistorial, Ciudad Colonial, the mayor Carolina Mejía and the president of the CND, Jaime Marte Martínez, highlighted the importance for both entities of being able to finalize this agreement to strengthen efforts aimed at achieving healthy lifestyles and away from the consumption of controlled substances in the municipalities of the National District.

“The need to continue educating our people on the prevention of the use of controlled substances, on the impact it has especially on the young population. And with the commitment of the central government, with our commitment in the city and the Council, we are determined to join forces to help combat and above all to support people who are using illegal substances and who need assistance and support of qualified people and qualified institutions that are going to help them so that this situation improves”, said Mayor Mejía.

This agreement contemplates in the first instance the realization of a mapping or inventory of people in consumption of psychoactive substances and related problems in the streets of the capital; the training of the technical staff that will work on this initiative, the creation of an intervention protocol to address treatment, rehabilitation and social integration.

“This agreement for us is a historic event because we are signing an agreement between two important institutions in the Dominican Republic. One of our visions is to promote the social integration of all sectors, both public and private. We thank you as a representative of the municipal government for that gesture of wanting to contribute; count on us”, were the words of the president of the CND, Jaime Marte Martínez.

Likewise, by means of this cooperation agreement, a work group will be created with the participation of the Ministry of Public Health, the Directorate of Mental Health, the Treatment Centers and the National Health Service for the planning and execution of care work for this population.

Psychological accompaniment and physical and psychological evaluations will be provided.
