The Takanakuy festival: a ritual of faith that takes place in the middle of the river at dawn

This carnival festivity takes place on the banks of the Yacus River, residents of the communities of Huasicancha (District of Pancán – Jauja province) and the neighborhood of Santa Ana (District of Huertas – Jauja province) compete and dance in the waters of the river from 4 in the morning.

The celebration is held in honor of the “Lord of Souls of Mayupata”, residents wait for dawn dancing in the river with musical bands to the rhythm of the ancestral Pachahuara, a dance that originates from the arrival of black slaves in the Peruvian highlands.

Economic Reactivation

Hundreds of people come to the province of Jauja for these festivities, which means a greater tourist movement, therefore the economy is benefited, since during these festivities the sale of food, liquor, crafts, visitor accommodation, in addition to promote the visit to other tourist places.
