The National Service for Comprehensive Care for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI) has reported this Wednesday on new clashes at the Guayas No. 1 Deprivation of Liberty Center, known as the Litoral Penitentiary, located in the city Ecuadorian from Guayaquil.
“We coordinate with the National Police and the Armed Forces the entry of elite groups to reinforce security, complying with the protocols and in strict respect for the rights of those deprived of liberty,” highlighted the SNAI.
Local media reported that several shots were heard from inside the penitentiary before the security forces arrived.
Preliminary reports detailed that the altercations were located in pavilions 2, 3, 9 and 12 of the center, although the information is not conclusive, nor is it known if there were injuries or deaths.
It is worth mentioning that at the end of last year, Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso signed a decree to create the Commission for Prison Dialogues and Pacification as a way to solve the prison crisis in the nation.
The measure was applied after the massacre that occurred in the Litoral prison itself in October 2021 and which left a balance of 118 dead and 79 injured. In addition, official data revealed that in Ecuador in all of 2021, about 330 people deprived of liberty were murdered.
