Drought: UTE will import energy from Argentina starting this weekend

in the next few hours Uruguay will begin to import electricity from Argentina. The offer is for a capacity of 350 MW and a price of US$ 120 MWh.

as he learned The Observerthere are expectations that Said importation takes place from this Saturday and continues until next Tuesday, February 21, inclusive.

The import from Argentina would be dispatched after the import from Brazil, and before the engines of the Central Batlle, according to the programming of the Electricity Market Administration (Adme).

The scarce rains recorded in recent months have affected the production of hydroelectric dams.

For this reason, since the beginning of this month Uruguay began to import energy from Brazil. These purchases serve to cover specific sections of the demand and thus reduce expenses for the ignition of the thermal park, with an estimated saving of US$ 800,000 per day in diesel, according to what UTE has managed.

The purchases that will be made from Argentina have the same objective of lowering costs during specific moments, to the extent that this available energy is cheaper than any of the thermal generation sources that could be dispatched in the country.

The opposite had happened last weekend. as reported The Observer, It was Argentina that bought electrical energy from Uruguay in the early hours of the morning, from surplus wind generation, to complete the supply of its systems in the midst of the heat wave.

There are currently no significant rainfall forecasts for any of the basins. Temperatures will be within the historical average, except for the weekend that is expected to be below, according to Adme.

Next week is scheduled continue importing from Brazil through Conversora de Melo. The prices of the operations carried out so far range between US$ 60 MWh and US$ 100 MWh. Besides, the convenience of dispatching the Punta del Tigre Combined Cycle will be analyzed daily, whose current generation cost is US$ 193.5 MWh.
