Surgery denied to Cuban opposition member with HIV

VIH, Cuba, Salud

Havana Cuba. The Cuban opponent Evelyn Pineda Concepcioncarrier of HIV ((human immunodeficiency virus), denounced to CubaNet that the Cuban regime has once again denied her medical attention.

“I have been with this infectious process for 19 days, I feel very bad and I cannot eat. I am weak due to the inflammation that I have in the lymph nodes because it is very painful”, explained the activist.

On February 10, 2023, Pineda Concepción went to the Miguel Enríquez Clinical Surgical Hospital (La Benéfica) in search of medical attention due to inflammation of the highly visible lymph nodes in the armpits. However, the doctor who treated her sent her back home.

“The doctor who was there (guardian) told me that I could not be drained, nor could they operate on my lymph nodes because they did not have the resources. They said they didn’t have a scalpel or gloves, that I should go to Calixto García; but when I got there they told me that they couldn’t operate on me either because I didn’t belong to that hospital,” explained the opposition member.

Although in Cuba people can receive emergency medical attention at any hospital, specialized consultations have another procedure. These must be through a shift previously granted, which can take months. alsowell, they can only go to the hospital corresponding to their municipality of residence and health area.

According to Pineda Concepción, among the suggestions of the doctors who treated her was to find a surgeon to operate on her own. “Despite explaining my basic pathology: that I have been an HIV patient for 18 years, they sent me to find a doctor,” denounced the young opposition member.

Faced with this dilemma, on Thursday night Pineda Concepción stood in front of his home, along with family members and opponents, with a poster demanding a doctor and a hospital where he could undergo lymph node surgery; and thus end his martyrdom.

“Where is the medical power of Cuba. I need a surgeon and a hospital to operate on me. Freedom, Homeland and Life. No more repression” could be read on the poster according to a photo given to Cubanet by the interviewee.

“I stood up around 9 at night with the sign, and between 11 and 12 two State Security officers appeared, whom I had never seen. They tore off my poster and even threw it into the middle of the street, threatening me that they were going to take me to the unit,” the young woman denounced.

In addition, the repressors called a police car to intimidate the activist. These uniformed men threatened to beat and arrest the young woman, and thus force her to abandon her protest.

“When the patrol car arrived, the police officer got out with the baton in his hand, threatening me and asking for my (identity) card. He went up to me with the cane twice… but he was advised, (he only) broke the sign and took it away, ”said Pineda Concepción.

Until the time of writing this note, the authorities had not yet provided Evelyn with medical attention.

In March 2022, the activist of the Movement of Opponents for a New Republic (MONR) denounced in an interview with CubaNet how the shortcomings of the Cuban health system prevented him from receiving treatment for the bacterial pneumonia he had acquired.

A year earlier, Evelyn also shared with this medium that her babyand would have been infected with HIV, due to various medical negligence during childbirth.
