Alejandro Mayorkas says he will not resign despite Republican pressure

OnCubaNews

The Secretary of National Security, the Cuban-American Alejandro Mayorkas, he does not intend to resign his position despite the pressure that the Republicans in Congress have exerted on him, mainly because of the new policy of granting a parole humanitarian aid to Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans.

The senior Biden administration official, who also controls immigration services, admitted that the immigration system is “broken,” but that it is up to Congress to solve the problem.

Mayorkas made these statements in an interview with CNN that will be broadcast on Sunday at the end of the afternoon, the journalist announced this Friday Chris Wallace, who interviewed him for his weekly show.

The Secretary of National Security assured that if Congress initiates a process of disqualification against him, it will attend to him, that it will answer all his questions and that he is not afraid of him. “He said that he does not intend to resign and instead calls on Congress, just as the president did, to fix the immigration system that has been broken for decades,” Wallace said.

Republican congressmen who want to impeach Mayorkas have argued that his claims that he maintains operational control of the border are unfounded and that the record arrests mark dereliction of duty, two issues that have repeatedly come up in hearings and have been cited. as a reason to accuse him.

In recent weeks, the key committee chair has already held two congressional hearings on the Biden administration’s handling of the US-Mexico border. Earlier this month, the House Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction over an impeachment ruling, held its first border-related hearing.

“These numbers make it clear that the Biden administration is not in control of the border,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan said during a hearing in February. “Month after month after month we’ve set records for immigrants coming into the country, and frankly, I think it’s intentional.”

The idea of disbarring Mayorkas is part of a broader Republican effort to stop Biden’s eventual immigration reforms. and his program parole humanitarian program, which started operating last January.

This is the case of the lawsuit by 20 states, including Florida, to legally cancel the program.

The case was assigned to a Texas judge appointed by former President Donald Trump, who is initially due to decide on April 25 whether or not to cancel the show.

But the governors of those 20 red states are rushing things and have filed a second lawsuit asking that the program be “provisionally” halted until a final decision is made.

The hearing has been scheduled for March 7, when the judge will hear the arguments on the need to detain him provisionally. The prosecutors of the 20 states will argue that one of the consequences that the program of parole is that it will cause more spending to the states and it will bust the school districts.

The Government is expected to oppose and argue that this case should be transferred to another court in Texas or in Washington DC.

“At the April 25 hearing it will be to define the rules of the case. But that case can take months with many hearings. That’s why they want to stop it now. The final decision will take months,” explains Miami immigration attorney Ángel Leal. “The judge can already consider, on March 7, that the program is in itself illegal, because it did not go through Congress,” he added in statements to various media.

The point is that “this parole It is in itself like a new visa,” he emphasizes, and for this reason “Republicans consider the program illegal.”
