MIAMI, United States. — Elián González Brotons, the rafter boy who was “sponsored” by Fidel Castro in the early 2000s, spoke to the state press about his recent nomination for deputy to the Cuban Parliament for the municipality of Cárdenas (Matanzas).
As is usual with the young man, his speech was full of allusions to the late dictator, who “will always have a seat and a place in our National Assembly and in our country.”
Elián, 29, works as assistant director of AT Comercial Varadero. In recent statements to rebel youthassured that at the time of being nominated, he thought of his father and Fidel Castro.
“If I am elected deputy, when I am sitting in Parliament sessions, I will feel very close to Fidel. Every time I am going to make a decision, that I am going to get closer to the people to report to them or listen to their problems, to attend to their concerns, I know that I will always have Fidel’s hand on my shoulder,” González told the official media.
Despite having received and accepted the nomination, the young man confessed that he had never aspired to “such a great position or responsibility.”
“Another reason that makes me happy and proud is knowing that it is at this moment, I never aspired to such a great position or responsibility, but I always said it, that I would be willing to assume it for my people whenever and whenever required. The fact of knowing that I am going to share with a part of the historical leadership fills me with pride”.
Elián González also argued that Cuba is a country blocked in the midst of a world crisis, and that “with the little we have we must try to solve it.”
“We know that we are a blocked country, that these are difficult times due to the world crisis, many times we will not have the resources nor will we have an immediate response, but for this reason the responsibility is double, because with what little we have, we must try to solve , and when we cannot resolve, at least give the honest and upfront response that our people deserve,” he said.
