OnCubaNews

A earthquake with magnitude 5.5 was registered at dawn by the stations of the National Seismological Service (SSNC) of Cuba, with reports of perceptibility in three provinces in the eastern part of the country.

The epicenter was not marked in national territory, however it was perceptible in Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo and Holguín, according to a report of Latin Press (PL).

Dr. Enrique Arango, technical deputy director of the National Center for Seismological Research (Cenais) and head of the SSNC, reported that the earthquake occurred at 01:50 am local time.

From Facebook, Arango expanded that the epicenter was not located in Cuban territory, “but due to its proximity it was felt with intensities from III to IV in different locations in the provinces of Guantánamo, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.”

The earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers and was located 82 kilometers southeast of Maisí, according to Cenais.

“Due to the distance at which it was located, it was felt very well in various buildings in towns in these provinces. We have been informed this morning that it felt very strong in buildings in Moa, Holguín. We did not have this information when the informative note was drafted, for this reason it is important that, to the extent possible, they inform us when they feel an earthquake, however slight it may be felt,” Arango reported.

They register an earthquake to the southwest of the Isla de la Juventud, the first perceptible earthquake of 2023 in Cuba
