Egg price per kilo: Why is it so expensive in Mexico 2023?

The egg has risen “two pesos a day”

In Tijuana, Coahuila, Baja California, Veracruz, Sinaloa, Guerrero, Durango, Colima and Chihuahua, the price can exceed 60 pesos, since it is where the greatest shortage is registered, according to ANPEC data. In Mexico City and the metropolitan area of the State of Mexico, on the other hand, the kilo of tilefish is above 55 pesos per kilo.

“At the supply center, the tenant told me that eggs have been rising by two pesos a day per kilo for a week,” said José Felipe Torres, a local merchant from the City of Puebla.

Will it drop in price?

The good news is that US egg prices fell to $2.61 a dozen on the wholesale market last Monday, according to market research agency Urner Barry. This is a 52% decrease from the December peak, when the dozen hit $5.43 per dozen.

Also in December, a dozen large Grade A eggs cost US consumers $4.25 on average, more than double the $1.79 a year earlier, according to monthly data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Avian flu, a highly contagious virus among various birds, including poultry, usually stops spreading during the summer months, but this did not happen in 2022, reducing production in a historic way.

Fortunately, according to the United States Department of Agriculture there have been no avian flu outbreaks among poultry since December 20, which will give the market a breather that could be reflected in lower prices in the coming weeks.
