USA calls "deplorable" decision of the Nicaraguan Justice to strip 94 opponents of their nationality

USA calls "deplorable" decision of the Nicaraguan Justice to strip 94 opponents of their nationality

The United States government condemned the withdrawal of nationality that the Nicaraguan Justice executed on Wednesday against 94 Nicaraguan citizens designated as critics of the government of Daniel Ortega.

“This act is incompatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which establishes that everyone has the right to nationality, and we condemn the measure of the Nicaraguan government to restrict the nationality of 94 other citizens,” said the spokesman for the Department of State Vedant Patel.

The announcement, made by a high magistrate in Managua, strips the nationality of, among others, the writer Sergio Ramírez, the poet Gioconda Belli and Carlos Fernando Chamorro, director of Confidencial and son of the former president of Nicaragua Violeta Barrios de Chamorro.

This group of almost a hundred opponents joins the previous ones, 222 released last week, that they were banished on a direct flight to the United States. The Ortega government confirmed shortly after his release that his Nicaraguan nationality remained; the Spanish government immediately announced that offered them the recourse of citizenshipas a way of solidarity.

Patel, this Thursday in exchange with reporters from the State Department, said categorically: “This is a deplorable act. And it is another step backwards for the Nicaraguan people and their hopes of continuing to live in the democracy they deserve.”

Despite the great differences between the Administration of Presidents Joe Biden and Daniel Ortega, Washington has held an open door to any conversation, although he has insistently criticized human rights violations and the imprisonment of political opponents and members of civil society.

“We remain steadfast and encouraging further steps by the Nicaraguan government to restore civil liberties, especially in light of its unilateral decision to release all 222 political prisoners last week. This movement that you have just described is a step in the opposite direction,” said the spokesman for US diplomacy.

The resolution approved a day ago in Managua It is based on an alleged “treason to the homeland” by those indicated, in addition to applying “accessory” sanctions such as the impossibility of holding public office or popular election.
