(EFE).- The governments of the United States, the Cayman Islands and the Bahamas returned a total of 64 irregular Cuban migrants to their country on Tuesday, reported the Ministry of the Interior.
With these recent returns, there are 33 made this year, for a total of 2,266 people returned from those three countries in addition to Mexico and the Dominican Republic.
These last Cuban migrants – 54 men and 11 women – were returned in three operations, in accordance with the bilateral agreements that Cuba maintains with countries in the region.
The Interior statement detailed that 19 migrants were handed over by the United States Coast Guard Service, 15 returned on a flight from the Cayman Islands and 30 from the Bahamas.
One of the deported Cubans was detained “for being the alleged perpetrator of serious criminal acts, which were investigated prior to his departure,” the Cuban state agency said.
Two days ago, the Dominican Republic returned to Cuba a group of 12 irregular migrants made up of 10 men and 2 women, most of whom had left the island illegally by sea.
Two days ago, the Dominican Republic returned to Cuba a group of 12 irregular migrants made up of 10 men and 2 women, most of whom had left the island illegally by sea, according to state media.
Cuba maintains that it maintains its commitment “with a regular, safe and orderly migration” and insists on “the danger and risk conditions for life that illegal departures from the country by sea represent.”
For several months now, the United States has seen record numbers of migrants trying to cross irregularly at its southern border, motivated, for the most part, by a new unprecedented migratory exodus from Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
In the case of Cuba, a total of 224,607 citizens arrived at the southern border of the United States in fiscal year 2022 –between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022–, according to the Customs and Border Protection Office of that nation. .
According to data from the US Coast Guard, in the current fiscal year, that body has intercepted 5,576 Cuban rafters, a figure close to the 6,182 that it apprehended in the previous period.
The Government of Washington implemented at the beginning of this year a policy to welcome to 30,000 monthly migrants from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua.
In parallel, it will immediately expel migrants from those countries who try to cross into its territory irregularly to Mexico. Mexico, for its part, agreed to admit 30,000 migrants a month who are expelled from US territory.
