More than 9,000 deaths in Syria due to earthquakes

The death toll in Syria due to the earthquakes on Monday, February 6, it exceeds 9,000, according to statements by the ambassador of that country in Cuba, Ghassan Obeid, collected by official Cuban media.

“The death toll exceeds 9,000 people, there are more than 8,000 seriously injured, as well as more than five million Syrians who currently have nowhere to take refuge and are in need of help,” the newspaper publishes. Granma.

The information came out with the visit of the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, to the diplomatic legation, where he signed the book of condolences on Tuesday in honor of those who died from the devastating earthquakes also registered in Turkey.

Last Wednesday, the president had gone to the Turkish embassy to sign the book of condolences for the victims and injured left by the earthquakes in that country.

In Syria, immersed in more than a decade of civil war, the affected area is divided between the territory controlled by the Government of Bashar al Asad and the last enclave of the country in the hands of the opposition.

The Syrian government authorized on Monday the use of the Bab al Salam and Al Rai crossings, both on the Turkish divide, to deliver UN aid for three months to opposition areas in the northwest of the country.

Cuban government expresses condolences for earthquake victims in Turkey

According to the international organization, at least 8.8 million people are affected in the Arab country and most will need some type of humanitarian assistance.

According to the agency Efe, Nearly 31,643 people have died and another 80,000 have been injured in the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that also devastated southeastern Turkey on Monday last week. In this way, the death toll between both nations would be over 40,000.
