Government confirmed the death of a forest brigade member who was fighting fires in the south-central zone

This afternoon, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, confirmed the death of a brigade member who was fighting forest fires in the Angol commune, La Araucanía region.

The events occurred this Monday as a result of a tree falling while the volunteer was building a firebreak in the Angol commune, La Araucanía region. According to the authority, this is the first death of a brigade member fighting the fires that have affected the country this year.

In this regard, Minister Tohá pointed out that “Felix Pérez Pereira, was a brigade member of a private forestry company who died in an accident yesterday as a result of a tree that collapsed while he was building firebreaks.”

He also added that “we want to express with him, with his memory, with the work he did, our recognition, our appreciation, our tribute and send our solidarity to his family.”

It should be noted that the unfortunate incident was considered a work accident, and that “it must be investigated for what reason it occurred, draw lessons from there and if there were responsibilities, also certainly,” Tohá pointed out.

“Let’s not throw away any early trial, except for the interest that -like any work accident- it be clarified and established with great precision” the minister concluded.
