Judith Pena | February 14, 2023

A trilateral meeting between Panama, the United States, and Colombia was held this Wednesday to discuss issues of irregular migration, border security, the fight against criminal organizations, and actions to mitigate environmental impact.

As a result of the meeting, a road map was identified, guided by the principles of the protection of human rights and the environment, and seeking to guarantee the human security of migrants who cross the jungles of Darién.

Likewise, the governments of Panama and Colombia agreed to strengthen efforts to dismantle criminal groups and networks that victimize and violate the rights and integrity of migrants seeking a better quality of life.

From this rapprochement, it was agreed to strengthen intelligence work with the support and cooperation of the United States and to strengthen the exchange of information between the prosecutor’s offices of Panama and Colombia.

During the meeting, the US Ambassador to Panama, Mari Carmen Aponte, said that last year the US granted $18 million to finance the care of migrants in Panama.
