Reconstruction of route 6

Reconstruction of route 6

“It is essential and will change national production,” said Lacalle Pou

The President of the Republic inaugurated, yesterday Monday, a bypass at kilometer 201,400 of Route 6, at the intersection with Route 14, Durazno department. The work is part of the reconstruction plan for 300 kilometers of track between Sarandí del Yi and Mercedes. This represents “a substantial change in national production and in the life of Uruguayans,” said Lacalle Pou.

In addition to the president, the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, and the Ministers of Transportation and Public Works, José Luis Falero, and of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres, participated in the inauguration of the works. Also in attendance were the Undersecretary of Transportation and Public Works, Juan José Olaizola; the mayor of Durazno, Carmelo Vidalín, and the mayor of Sarandí del Yí, Carlos Luberriaga.

The projects on Route 6 include a new single track layout with a length of 6.8 kilometers. This measure will prevent the flooding of the area and the consequent isolation of the city when the rains increase the flow of the river. In addition, three structures were built on the bridges of the Yí River and the Illescas stream, and on the railway.

This work is part of the Circuit 3 Road Corridor Project, through the public-private participation mechanism, with work from two companies. The plan for the reconstruction of the route is the largest tendered by the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works through this modality, with an initial investment amount of about 200 million dollars. It covers some 300 kilometers of highway, from Sarandí del Yí to the city of Mercedes, the repair of ten bridges and the construction of another ten.

During the act, Lacalle Pou considered that it is a fundamental work, and that, added to those carried out along route 6, it will allow to change the economic situation of the entire area. He added that it represents a substantial change in national production and in the life of Uruguayans.

“I could not conceive of the center of the country without this work,” said the president, who pointed out that reaching its completion was essential to achieve the unification of the center of the country.

He also argued that the work on Route 6 from kilometer 329 to Vichadero will also mean a “substantive change.”

Minister Falero, meanwhile, appreciated the effort of public and private actors during the process of rebuilding the route, which, he considered, “has been the product of constant and permanent work.”

In addition, he argued that these improvements will mean peace of mind for the inhabitants of the city, who will no longer suffer from the impossibility of transit, and will improve their quality of life. He added that these bridges are contributions to the country’s development process, looking towards the future.
