Samantha Jirón says that the last thing she imagined living at her young age was being banished from her own country. Being in a jail in Nicaragua for opposing the government of Daniel Ortega believed that it was the worst thing that could happen to her, but she indicates that hours after being released along with 200 other people, she found out that her nationality had been revoked.
“When I realized that they deleted files about me, I can’t believe it, the last thing I imagined living in my life at 23 years old was that they had thrown me out of my own country,” Jirón told the voice of america.
She remained detained for more than a year in the women’s prison ‘La Esperanza’, after having been sentenced to 8 years in prison for the crimes of “conspiracy” against the State of Nicaragua and propagation of false news.
And now, upon leaving prison in a decision, according to the Nicaraguan government, in a “unilateral” manner, he values his freedom again, although he regrets not being in his country.
For now, the young woman assures that she is interested in the offer extended by the Spanish government to nationalize the more than 200 political prisoners who were releasedAlthough he assures that one day -when the political situation changes- he plans to return.
“I was at a conference given by the Spanish ambassador in Washington where he explained what nationality consisted of. I am very interested in it and I plan to take it”, adds Jirón to the VOA.
According to the young woman, the ambassador explained that those released from prison can obtain Spanish nationality and not necessarily live in Spain and “I can continue my parole process, it is something very good.”
Several released prisoners have accepted the offer
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, José Manuel Albares, there are “several” Nicaraguan political prisoners who have accepted the offer of said government.
“There are already several who have said yes to this offer and we will be delighted to welcome them as soon as possible, because this is their home; Spain is your home”, said the official during the presentation of the Democracy Program of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
