The United States ambassador to Nicaragua, Kevin Sullivan, is back in Managua after managing the entry into the North American country of 222 political prisoners of the Daniel Ortega regime. He affirms that the Joe Biden government is “proud” for the reception of the majority of Nicaraguan opponents.
Back in Nicaragua after a week in which the United States welcomed a group of 222 Nicaraguan political prisoners. The enormous logistical and humanitarian effort that we mounted in a few days was an achievement that makes us proud and that we did with a lot of love for the Nicaraguan people,” said the US ambassador.

This past February 9, the Nicaraguan government released and exiled almost 80% of political prisoners, and although the dictator Daniel Ortega has affirmed that the decision was unilateral, critics and opponents point out that his “arm folded” regime and could not withstand international pressure.
The opponents arrived in Washington DC on Thursday morning, upon their arrival they were treated by medical personnel who assessed their physical and psychological health situation. Human rights organizations expressed their “relief” at the release of the opponents, but rejected the exile to which they were subjected.
They were exiled for being considered “traitors to the homeland”, to justify their decision they reformed article 21 of the Political Constitution of the Republic, through the Legislative Branch, and ordered the Judiciary to issue a “deportation” order for violating the Law 1055, Law of Sovereignty.
The Nunca Más Nicaragua Human Rights Collective denounced that the dictatorship committed “legal atrocities” by banishing the 222 political prisoners to the United States, in addition to taking away their Nicaraguan nationality through a subsequent reform.
According to the human rights organization, the political prisoners “are innocent, they were imprisoned and sentenced through trials that lacked legality by violating due process, both internal regulations and the criminal procedure code and the Political Constitution of Nicaragua, as well as international guarantees in the field of human rights”.
