The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, held a telephone conversation this Monday with his Syrian counterpart, Bashar Al Assad, where he expressed his condolences after the 7.8 earthquakes that hit the country and Türkiye last Monday.
In a statement published in the website of the Ministry for Foreign Affairsboth heads of state “agreed to continue joining efforts to strengthen relations between both nations, so that they contribute to the construction of a multipolar world.”
“The Venezuelan president expressed, on behalf of all the people, his condolences to the president and the people of Syria, pointing out that the heroic Syrian brotherly people is capable of overcoming the repercussions of this earthquake, just as it has been able to overcome 12 years of terrorist war driven by imperialism,” the statement said.
For his part, the Syrian president thanked the humanitarian aid sent for Venezuela and valued this gesture, knowing the difficulties the country is going through.
Until now, the earthquakes already leave a balance of more than 35,000 deaths.
In Syria, the number of deaths from the earthquake is already at 4,300, according to the latest balance presented by the United Nations.
Meeting between Syrian president and UN chief for Humanitarian Affairs
This Monday, in addition, President Bashar al-Assad received a meeting with Martin Griffiths, the Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations Organization (UN) and relief coordinator in emergency situations.
During the meeting, he refers to the SANA News Agency, The two sides discussed the repercussions of the earthquake that devastated Syria and the urgent humanitarian needs of the Syrian people to overcome these repercussions.
The UN Under-Secretary General highlighted the work carried out by the Syrian government to carry out search and rescue work, after the catastrophe, considered the worst in the region in almost a century.
On the other hand, Al-Assad stressed the need to bring urgent aid to all regions of Syria, including those under occupation and control by armed terrorist groups.
It should be remembered that, last Friday, the Government of Syria declared as disaster zones to the four provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Idlib and Hama, the most affected by the recent earthquakes in that country.
