Karim Vera denounces illegal trade on the border with Colombia despite opening

Venezuela and Colombia signed an investment promotion and protection agreement, through which it was intended to promote the reception of private investments in both countries, but the potential of this instrument is limited by the prevailing illegality on the border

Relations between Venezuela and Colombia have normalized in recent months, with the promise of stopping irregular trade at illegal border crossings after the opening of the border for commercial purposes, which took place on September 26, but this outlook remains unfulfilled.

This is denounced by Karim Vera, a deputy of the National Assembly elected in 2015, who assures that the so-called “trails” continue on the border without the authorities applying any corrective action, which should be the responsibility of the governor of Táchira, Freddy Bernal, at least from the Venezuelan side.

“We have followed up since the reopening of the regular bridges and there is not even a feeling of stability. Control is still over smuggling and irregular businesses, in which the security forces are involved,” he said in an interview reviewed by Momentum.

The leader of Primero Justicia criticized the authorities for blaming the citizens for these illegal border businesses despite the fact that the same military and police officials are responsible for what happens.

«No corrections are taken. On the contrary, they insist on blaming the citizens and organizations as a few days ago they pointed out to the agro-producers and recently the Association of Cattlemen of the Táchira state (Asogata), who warned of the passage of allegedly expired meat from Colombia to Venezuela, “he exclaimed.

Vera insisted that the economic reactivation in Táchira depends directly on the regularization of trade at the border, since the promotion of the productive sectors implies the resumption of commercial exchange between the countries through legal mechanisms.

“A complete mistake, giving strength to the myth regarding the development of the Colombian-Venezuelan border axis, at least on our side, another failed promise, since irregular economic activities seem to have more weight and crimes increase because economic interests are greater,” he added. .

Just a week ago, Venezuela and Colombia signed an investment promotion and protection agreement, through which it was intended to promote the reception of private investments in both countries, but the potential of this instrument is limited by the prevailing illegality on the border.
