Bishops of Spain: Nicaraguan Church is persecuted for defending freedom of the people

The Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) reiterated its concern about the religious persecution suffered by the Catholic Church in Nicaragua by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

“The Spanish Episcopal Conference follows with pain the worrying situation that is being experienced in Nicaragua with the exile of a large group of its citizens to the United States and the sentencing of the Bishop of Matagalpa, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, to 26 years in prison, and the dispossession of his Nicaraguan citizenship”, expresses the Catholic hierarchy of the Iberian country.

The Spanish bishops expressed their solidarity with the Nicaraguan Church and their feelings of unity in the face of “the persecution of the country’s government.”

“At this moment we join the sentiments of the bishops of the Nicaraguan Episcopal Conference who suffer persecution by the government of the country for defending the freedom of Nicaraguans. We ask all Catholics and all people of good will to pray for the peaceful resolution of this conflict and an active commitment to peace that has its indisputable foundation in justice”, reads the note, published through the page website of the Spanish Church.

The Spanish Episcopate, likewise, reiterated its call to the Ortega regime to release the political prisoners who are still in Nicaraguan jails and restore public liberties in the country.

“At the same time we ask the Nicaraguan authorities to listen to the voice of the people they serve, make their decisions in a spirit of service for the good of all and release prisoners imprisoned for political reasons,” underlines the message of the Spanish bishops.
