Retail trade closes 2022 with 1% growth

Retail trade sales volume closed 2022 with growth of 1%, according to data from the Monthly Survey of Commerce (PMC) released today (9) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This was the sector’s worst result since 2016, when it had dropped by 6.2%.Retail trade closes 2022 with 1% growth

Among the retail segments, the activity of fuels and lubricants, with a rise of 16.6%, was the one that presented the best result. Another four activities closed the year with growth: books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (14.8%), pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (6.3%), equipment and materials for office, information technology and communication (1 .7%) and supermarkets, food, beverages and tobacco (1.4%).

Three activities fell: other articles for personal use and Suntextiles (-8.4%), furniture and household appliances (-6.7%) and textiles, apparel and footwear (-0.5%).

In December, retail trade fell by 2.6% compared to the previous month and increased by 0.4% compared to December 2021. The sector’s nominal revenue increased by 14.1% in the accumulated result for the year and 10.2% % compared to December 2021, but decreased by 0.3% in the passage from November for December.

Expanded retail, which also analyzes the sectors of construction materials and vehicle and parts sales in addition to the eight retail activities, closed the year with a drop of 0.6% in sales volume, due to losses of 8.7% in construction sector and 1.7% in vehicles.

The sector had a loss of 0.6% compared to December 2021, but increased by 0.4% in the passage from November for December.

Expanded retail revenue grew 12.6% in the 12-month period, 8.7% compared to December 2021 and 0.4% in the period from November for December.
