The general Assembly meets this Thursday, at the request of the Colorado Party, to remember the events of February 9, 1973known as “bitter february and viewed as the first step in the institutional breakdown that led to the coup d’état on June 27 of that year.

The broadcast of the session can be followed live here:

On February 9, 1973, President Juan María Bordaberry accepted a military proposal and relieved Antonio Francese as Minister of National Defense. Three days later, the president ended up accepting all the demands of the Armed Forces and its continuity was ensured in office after “Boizo Lanza Pact”, which placed in the hands of the military the mission of “providing security to national development” and consecrated their participation in the political life and government of the country. There was born the National Security Council (Cosena), as an “advisory body” of the Executive Branch.

This is an episode in which the Colorados claim to have been in a “clear opposition” position, while pointing to the attitude of the Broad Front and the National Workers’ Convention (CNT) in that episode.

In this sense, the Colorado Party formed a working group at the end of 2022 to vindicate some figures of the community who “played in the defense of the institutions,” according to deputy Ope Pasquet. These include Vice President Jorge Sapelli, Senator Amílcar Vasconcellos and Admiral Juan José Zorrilla.

The content is watched with concern by representatives of all political parties. It is assumed that beyond the tribute there will also be words for the role played by the Colorado Juan María Bordaberry and the position of some leaders and sectors of the left, who sympathized with some statements by the military, such as statements 4 and 7 issued by the Army and Air Force.

Concern about the quality of the debate was the subject of conversation at the coordination meeting on Monday the 6th in the Senate, since the Vice President Beatriz Argimón urged political parties to that the exhibitions were “within the framework of respect”.

The coordinator of the bench of Senators of the Broad Front, Liliam Kechichian, told El Observador that they have “expectations” that the interventions “contribute” and that they spoke so that “it is not a passing of bills” although there is no “certainty” of let this happen.
