ILO mission arrives from Switzerland to support pension reform

A special mission from the International Labor Organization, ILO, arrived in the country from Switzerland to present its recommendations regarding the pension and labor reforms that the government of Gustavo Petro is developing.

(Read: Colombia would have a universal social protection system).

In its report, the ILO points out that a structural reform of the pension system must be builtto eliminate inequality and competition within the system.

We have highlighted in the report some points that might not be aligned with the principles, such as the sustainability of the system, the predictability of pensions, that they be sufficient, so when there is a system with competition between two regimes, it can lead to problems of poverty in old age, which is what the report tries to identify and remedy, and could also be inputs for the pension reform”, said Maya Stern Plaza, ILO official in charge of standards and legislation in the Department of Social Protection.

Along with this, the international organization insisted on the implementation of a system of pillars that benefits older adults who They do not have access to a pension and thus may have greater coverage.

“We want to give some guidelines to create comprehensive social security systems, which would cover both people who have contribution capacity and people who do not have that capacity and therefore also talks about how a social protection system could be integrated within a social security mechanism, then all of this is in line with international standards,” said Stern Plaza.

For her part, Gloria Inéz Ramírez, Minister of Labor, He thanked the willingness of the ILO in this process.

One of the conclusions that has been reached is that, as our pension system is, it is a system that is not sustainable over time and above all because we have two regimes that are asymmetrical and of course that are not fulfilling the function for which they were created, which is to retire the greatest number of Colombian men and women, the proposal then is to rectify, it is to align and on that basis we are going to advance in the ILO convention 102 and we will work so that the reform that we are building is the best for the country“said the official.

Finally, On February 13, the ILO mission will present the recommendations before the tripartite subcommittee, that is, production unions, labor unions and government entities that are preparing the pension reform bill.
