Cuban government expresses condolences for earthquake victims in Turkey

The Cuban President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, signed this Wednesday at the embassy of Turkey the book of condolences in memory of the thousands of deaths caused by the devastating earthquakes registered last Monday, both in that country and in Syria.

“On behalf of the Cuban people and Government, I express my heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of Türkiye, and we extend them to the families and relatives of the victims of the high-intensity earthquake that affected the country, causing human losses, injuries and material damage. ”, wrote the Cuban president as quoted by the newspaper Granma.

Díaz-Canel spoke with the ambassador of that nation in Havana, His Excellency Mr. Vehbi Esgel Etensel, and with other members of that legation.

“In this particularly difficult moment, the Turkish people and their authorities can count on Cuba’s full solidarity,” he also made known in his message.

According to several international sources cited today, taking into account the figures provided by officials and doctors, there are already 14,351 deaths in Turkey and 3,162 in Syria, bringing the confirmed total to 17,513.

In Turkey, 6,444 collapsed buildings had been reported in ten provinces.

Cuba willing to collaborate with Turkey and Syria after powerful earthquakes

The United Nations said on Thursday it had sent its first aid convoy to the northwest of the country.

In the last hours there have been several rescues of people who had been buried under the rubble for more than 50 hours, while specialized teams dig in search of other possible survivors.
