Government installs commission to zero deforestation in Brazil by 2030

Government will use resources from the Amazon Fund to support the Yanomami

Zero deforestation in all Brazilian biomes by 2030. This is the objective of the Permanent Interministerial Commission for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation and Burning in Brazil (PPCD), which met for the first time this fourth-Friday (8). The inter-ministerial effort also seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate income and quality of life for the population that lives and interacts with the forest.Government installs commission to zero deforestation in Brazil by 2030

“President Lula established zero deforestation by 2030, but with the strategy of combating illegal activities, supporting sustainable productive activities, investing in the bioeconomy, low carbon, sustainable development, science and technology, innovation, so that Brazil can at the same time fight atrocities like we are seeing now in the Yanomami Indigenous Land and we know that they also exist in relation to the Kayapó, Mundurucus and other indigenous peoples”, explained the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva.

With a plan for the next seven years, the minister avoided setting a target for deforestation in the first year of government. According to Marina Silva, part of the degradation was caused by a period of vacuum in environmental policies.

“We already have deforestation, which comes from the other government, of more than 6 thousand square kilometers (km²), this is what comes from the government of President Bolsonaro. From of January from 2023, [o desmatamento] it is our responsibility. but there is a deforestation rate already accumulated from the previous government and we are going to do everything so that this curve can go down”, she assured.

In the activities of the first meeting, there is the definition of the structure of the program, such as the subgroups, which will be divided by biomes. The work agenda provides deadlines for the delivery of action plans for each biome: the first 45 days for the Amazon, the subsequent 90 days for the Cerrado and then the Pantanal, Caatinga, Atlantic Forest and Pampa. the goal is to have all sectoral plans already being implemented by August.

The PPCD will integrate actions of 19 ministries and will be chaired by Minister Ruy Costa, from the Civil House. The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change will be responsible for the executive secretariat of the Permanent Interministerial Commission for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation. Agriculture and Livestock also participate; Science, Technology and Innovation; Justice and Public Security; Integration and Regional Development; Foreign Relations; Defence, Finance, Planning and Budgeting; Mines and Energy; Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture; Fishing and Aquaculture; Work and Employment; Development, Industry, Commerce and Services; Transport; Indian people; Management and Innovation in Public Services and Institutional Security Office of the Presidency of the Republic.

Yanomami

According to Marina Silva, the federal government is working to prevent the return of illegal mining activities in the country by setting up fixed bases in vulnerable locations. According to the minister, there must be a constant presence of the State to prevent the return of illegal activities.

“What we are doing is a structured disintrusion process. It is no longer the seasonal one, in which prospectors have their equipment confiscated or destroyed, leave for a period, hide in the forest and then return”, she explained. “Right now, Ibama together with the Federal Police, the Ministry of Defense, with Funai are setting up bases that will remain to prevent the return [dos garimpeiros]. We are taking structured measures to prevent transshipment, which is leaving Yanomami Land and staying in other equally vulnerable areas. This is a difficult and complex job”, he added.

Yesterday (7), President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reported that there are 840 lanes clandestine flights, of which 75 are close to Yanomami lands. “It is impossible not to see this. Whoever allowed this must be held accountable,” said Lula.

According to the President of the Republic, control of indigenous lands will be restructured with the participation of mayors and governors. Lula also stated that the government will not allow mining on indigenous lands.

“We will not allow illegal mining on indigenous lands. We are in the process of removing illegal miners from Roraima. The situation that the Yanomami find themselves near the garimpo is degrading. We also need to find out who is responsible for what happened.”
