Customs alert for new types of fraud linked to foreign shipments
The direction dependent on the MEF warns about the use of apocryphal notifications to collect an alleged tax.
The National Customs Directorate (DNA) issued a statement days ago in which it “alerts the population to two new types of scams that, through apocryphal notifications, are sent to different people trying to collect an alleged tax from the DNA ”, before the alleged arrival of “money or gift package” from outside the country.
In this sense, the DNA detailed the two modalities that it has been able to detect up to now.
In the case of the first, it is reported that “the person receives the notice that he has a package with money in his name and is asked to pay the taxes related to the free transit of the money.”
“You are provided with documentation, apocryphal General Resolutions and you are asked to make the tax adjustment payment for 2% of the amount sent plus administrative and representation expenses,” the statement said.
In the second modality, “a friend or family member” communicates from abroad through WhatsApp or Facebook, requesting help to manage a package with gifts.
“The person is told that they will be sent the money for the costs and the resolution or document from Customs where the costs and penalties that must be paid are reported, through the account that is sent to them,” Customs reported.
