The Julcani mine (Huancavelica) of Buenaventura Mining Company ordered the suspension of its operations after suffering threats and attacks on Sunday, February 5.
Buenaventura reported that that day “a group of residents of communities that are outside the area of influence of the Julcani Unit and who mobilize under political slogans within the current situation of the country, committed acts of vandalism against the mining operation.”
The company also clarified that “it has maintained relationships of trust with neighboring communities for 70 years.”
“At 11 in the morning (on Sunday), these residents broke into the mining camp to coerce Julcani’s representatives to sign a document with content that the company disagrees with, demanding, among other things, that the mining unit completely paralyze its operations until further notice. Likewise, they forced the workers of the operation to leave the facilities under threats, stoned offices and vehicles of the mining unit, and stole some belongings,” the company added through a statement.
The mining company, with the objective of safeguarding the integrity of its personnel, chose to demobilize its personnel and suspend its activities at the mine, located in the province of Angaraes, Huancavelica.
In addition, he expressed his rejection of acts of violence and threats against the population and its collaborators.
“This situation limits the company to carry out essential activities within the operation, which puts the environmental safety of the area at risk, as has been immediately communicated to OEFA and Osinergmin for the determination of the corresponding responsibilities,” Buenaventura specified. .
