“There is no will from the government or Congress”

"There is no will from the government or Congress"

The Citizen Coalition, a group that brings together more than 340 organizations, demanded – in a public statement – that Congress and President Dina Boluarte agree to overcome the crisis the country is experiencing.

Álvaro Henzler, co-leader of the group, recalled that the coalition proposed reforms on early elections since last year; however, “a coup d’état, deaths, chaos, has had to happen, for this issue to begin to be discussed.”

“Clearly, there is no will from the government or Congress,” he said.

Likewise, it considered that “personal interests, mercantilist interests and ideological narratives” prevent reaching agreements. “We demand early elections for this year, approval of electoral reforms, investigation of the deceased and a dialogue process to get closer and heal wounds,” he told Peru21.

Asked about whether there is still time for new elections this year, I point out that “yes, but it depends on the two powers of the State.”

To achieve this, he noted, “the Government must put repression aside, Congress no longer put its ideological obsessions before and, finally, citizens must dialogue with democrats of the right and left in a discussion in which we know where we want to go as a country” .
