Cuban wrestler Oscar Pino had no rivals at the Open Tournament in Zagreb, Croatia, where he won the Greco-Roman-style 130kg division crown after overwhelming all four opponents he faced with just one point allowed.
In one of the World Ranking Series contests, the man from the capital imposed his law with a very consistent performance on the mats, as reflected by his 8-0 victories over three rivals with international experience such as the Uzbek Temurbek Nasimov, the Finn Matti Elias Kuosmanen and the Iranian Amir Mohammadali Ghasemimonjezi.
After that perfect tour, Pino came out favorite in the title discussion against the Norwegian Oskar Marvik, bronze in the 2021 World Cup and champion of the Zagreb Open in 2019. As soon as in the first set, the Cuban asserted that condition and he scored seven points that opened an insurmountable gap.
With that advantage, the Antilles handled the fight calmly and, although he allowed a point, he did not face major complications to reach the crown, his second this season, after winning a couple of weeks ago in Nice, France. In all, Pino has won seven bouts without the shadow of a loss since the start of 2023.
The one who did not run with the same luck was the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, Luis Alberto Orta (67 kilograms), defeated in the semifinals by technical superiority (13-4) against the Chinese Husiyuetu, who ultimately won the crown.
The man from the capital had drawn his first fights against the Indian Singh Karanjit (9-1), the Azeri Hasrat Jafarov (5-1) and the Iranian Seyed Danial Seyed Shamsollah Sohrabi (6-2), but could not with the Asian exponent in the fight for the pass to the final. However, Orta managed to beat the Finn Elmer Joakim Mattila 4-2 in the bronze discussion and climbed to the podium.
