CDMX, Mexico.- The face of Celia Cruzglory of Cuban culture, will be stamped on a North American coin, reported in a statement the United States Mint (US MINT).
The Cuban was elected along with four other women from various professions (Congresswoman Patsy Takemoto Mink, surgeon Mary Edwards Walker and writers and activists Pauli Murray and Zitkala-Ša). They all had “remarkable and multifaceted lives, and have had a significant impact on our nation in their own unique way,” said MINT Director Ventris C. Gibson.
These awards are part of the American Women Quarters Program, which consists of presenting coins inspired by notable women.
About Celia, the institution said that they chose her because “she was a Cuban-American singer, cultural icon and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century.”
The Casa de la Moneda also noted the multiple recognitions received by La Reina de la Salsa. “Cruz’s many honors and awards include five Grammy Awards, a National Medal of Arts, and a posthumous Grammy for Lifetime Achievement.”
The coin will circulate until 2024 but the design with the image of Cruz will be known in the middle of this year.
Last January, the prestigious magazine Rolling Stone located Celia Cruz ranked 18th among the 200 best singers of the last hundred years.
In life Celia conquered everything she wanted: more than 50 years on stage, 22 gold records, Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards, honorary doctorates from Yale, Miami and Florida International universities, and even a star on the Walk of Fame. What she could not do was play again in Havana, they didn’t even let her return to bury her parents. Cuba’s most international singer was erased from radio stations, television and music books for opposing the dictatorship.
