This Thursday, the Impeachment Committee of the Chamber of Deputies met again to move forward with the request for impeachment against the Supreme Court. The debate was resumed with the presentation of the authors of 14 accusation projects against the members of the highest court.
After concluding the session, Carolina Gaillard, president of the commission, maintained that “there are reasons” to initiate the legal process against the judges of the Supreme Courtwhich the ruling party denounced for “poor performance of their functions”, after recent rulings issued by the court.
Likewise, Gaillard explained that next week it will be resolved if progress is made with the investigation: “There are reasons to initiate the impeachment of the members of the Supreme Court. On Thursday, February 9, it will be resolved whether the commission advances in the investigation or decides not to do so through a simple majority vote.”
Regarding the session held this Thursday, he explained: “Yesterday the authors of the projects requesting impeachment ratified their complaints. There are 14 projects and 60 facts that are attributed to the four judges.”
The deputy also highlighted that the Commission’s analysis “is being carried out with objectivity, seriousness and commitment”, and stated that “the complaints against the judges of the Supreme Court are institutionally serious, which deserves that the Chamber of Deputies address their treatment”.
In this way, he stressed: “As legislators we have the responsibility to act if we know of complaints about poor performance in the public function of the country’s highest authorities and to investigate to determine responsibilities.”
And he continued: “Having learned of alleged irregularities, such as the lack of independence of the Power of attorneywe must investigate these complaints, always respecting the guarantees of due process and defense in court”.

Next Thursday, when the Commission meets again, the admissibility report will be presented, “a resolution that allows the opening of evidence or the substantiation of the summary; means that the investigation is opened if it is considered that there is sufficient support in the complaintsGaillard explained.
With this, they vote “by simple majority, just like the opinions”. In addition, he clarified that admissibility refers to “determining with which file we are going to open the investigation, to investigate what things and from what judges”, with which, if the case progresses, it will then be taken to court.
