Grand Master Camilo Gómez triumphs in the Cuban Blitz Chess Championship

The Grand Master (GM) Camilo Gómez was crowned champion of chess Blitz in the national tournament of the modality that culminated this Wednesday in the city of Holguín.

Camilo, a native of the host city of the event, accumulated 5.5 points after the finalized matches agreed to three minutes for each player, plus a two-second increase after each move according to a report from the specialized portal Hit.

Carlos Daniel Albornoz from Camagüey closed with a similar accumulated score, who this time did not benefit from the tie-break system. The third position went to another from Holguin, Isán Ortiz (5 points).

Albornoz, monarch of the specialty in 2022, will be one of the Cuban representatives in chess at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador 2023, where the Blitz appears among the summoned modalities, the report points out.

The contest, with seven rounds of action, brought together 25 contestants and is considered the prelude to the Cuban championships of classic games.

Commendation, and draw for the national championship

The president of the Cuban Chess Federation, Carlos Rivero, praised the organization of the event, where the aspirants to the throne of the country were present. Rivero also headed the technical meeting and the draw for the national championship, which defined the fate of the 12 candidates.

According to HitFrom the first round, interesting duels can be glimpsed, such as that of Albornoz moving black pieces against Lelys Martínez from Santiago. It also turns out with the one that will star Isán with similar figures before Ermes Espinosa from Villa Clara.

Omar Almeida from the capital will move the whites in his fight against Luis Ernesto Quesada from Ciego de Avila, and Alexey Fernández, also from Havana, will do the same when he faces the local Rider Díaz.

The program also provides for the crosses of Henry Soto from Mayabe with Dylan Berdayes from Havana, and that of Jerzy Jesús Pérez and Elier Miranda from Villa Clara.

Cuban Carlos Daniel Albornoz wins Blitz joust in international chess tournament held in Mexico

The latter dominated the qualifying stage along with Ermes, both with six points, and must be among those who offer the most resistance to the members of the national preselection, “seeded” directly in this defining section.

Of all those who are now competing, only Albornoz (2019 and 2020) and Isán (2013, 2014 and 2015) have reigned before, points out the sports media.
