Six new councilors took office this Thursday (2) at the Rio de Janeiro City Council in open vacancies with the resignation of parliamentarians who were elected federal deputies. With the arrival of three women, the House now has 11 councilors, the largest female group since the eighth legislature between 2008 and 2011. The Chamber of Rio is made up of 51 parliamentarians.
Luciana Novaes, from the PT, Luciana Boiteux and Monica Cunha, both from the PSOL, Edson Santos, from the PT, Jorge Pereira, from Avante, and Alexandre Beça, from the PSD, took office. They fill, respectively, the vacancies of the now federal deputies Lindbergh Farias, from the PT, Tarcísio Motta and Chico Alencar, both from the PSOL, Reimont, from the PT, Luciano Vieira, from the PL, and Alexandre Isquierdo, who is the current Secretary of State of Youth and Healthy Aging. This last vacancy was occupied by councilor Célio Lupparelli (without party), who now assumes the effective mandate of councilor after the resignation of Laura Carneiro (PSD).
The mayor, Carlo Caiado (PSD), highlighted that the arrival of the parliamentarians represents a renovation of more than 10% of the House. “It is a significant change, but one that will maintain the high level of debates in the House and, above all, the work and commitment to the locals that has been the hallmark of the City Council of Rio de Janeiro. It is a moment of joy, of welcoming new colleagues, some newcomers to Parliament, others who are returning (…), but we will also miss the colleagues who are leaving for new challenges”, he said.

The vice president of the Chamber of Rio, Tânia Bastos, read the term of office of the parliamentarians and drew attention to the fact that the presence of women in the House has increased.
“Today, we have 11 councilors. We went from eight to 11 women in the House. We regret the departure of Laura Carneiro. Even so, we have a significant increase”, said Tânia.

At the beginning of the ceremony, the councilors observed a minute of silence in honor of journalist Glória Maria. The Rede Globo reporter and presenter died this Thursday morning in Rio. She was the first black television reporter in Brazil and served as an inspiration to women of different generations.
