The Chinese community in Panama has been preparing with the Traditional Dance of the Chinese Lions and other cultural events that are part of the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year 2022 of the “Water Tiger”, which will spread throughout Panama during the month of February.
This celebration begins this Tuesday, February 1 with the parade of lion dance teams, whose departure will be at 8:30 am from the Guang Gong Temple (Kuan Tei Kung) to the V Centenario Park, followed by the traditional dance of the lions. Chinese lions and the Good Fortune Ceremony that will take place at 9:30 in the V Centenario Park.
This year for the first time and due to the 167 years of Chinese presence in Panama, and the invaluable contribution of this community to our country, the initiative was born to convert the Chinese New Year date into a “Country Event” with the original name used in China which is the Spring Festival, becoming a consolidated program in alliance with all Chinese Associations at the national level, according to CONECHI, as organizing member of the event.
This decision is part of the activities of the bicentennial, and was planned despite the difficulties linked to the pandemic, however, as a Country Event, it is emerging as a regional opportunity to make visible the contribution of the entire Chinese diaspora to our continent.
The celebration of the Chinese New Year of the “Water Tiger” 2022, with various activities during the month of February, represents a valuable artistic and cultural exchange, as a fundamental element of transcendental importance that strengthens the relationship of friendship and cooperation between China and Panama, in addition to contributing to the economic reactivation strategies of the current administration.
However, due to the growing increase in Covid cases that is currently taking place in Panama and the world, the Council of Chinese Ethnicity, the Ministry of Culture, the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Panama, as responsible organizers, expressed their interest in collaborating with the mitigation of this fourth wave and informs the general public that some Chinese New Year 2022 Celebration activities will take place virtually and others in person.
In all events, the biosafety measures recommended by the public health authorities will be strictly applied, and attendees will be required to complete their vaccination schedule.
