The Puno town of Santa Catalina, located in the far north of the countrys, woke up this Tuesday under a blanket of snow that painted the hills, houses and streets of the Puno site white, in the middle of the summer season.
After intense rains that were recorded in the area more than a week ago, in the early hours of this Tuesday snowflakes began to fall in the town located at almost 4,000 meters of altitude, on the border with Bolivia.
The images were published on social networks by its inhabitants, who indicated that very low temperatures are recorded, which caused the fall of snow water, completely changing the landscape from the high peaks to the houses and streets of the area.
“The snowfall was recorded from 4 to 6 in the morning and we found this surprise that the town was painted white when it dawned,” Fabio Bejarano, a communicator from Santa Catalina, told Télam.
The natural phenomenon in the middle of the summer season reached the Serranías de la Cruz, El Angosto and La Ciénegaand “from our place we can appreciate the glow of the brilliant snow, which transforms into an unusual landscape”, he graphed.
The resident indicated that it is “uncommon” for snow to fall during the summer season, although he warned that throughout the month of January “the rains did not stop and the temperatures dropped considerably”.
In this context, he revealed that inclement weather increased river flows“which sometimes prevent the passage of people in the area who need to connect with different towns,” he explained.
Santa Catalina, a town that encompasses 474 years of history, is considered one of the oldest in the country and is located in the extreme north of the province of Jujuy, just 3 kilometers from the border with Bolivia.
To get to the site from the capital of Jujuy, you must travel about 295 kilometers along National Route 9, to La Quiaca, and, from there, continue along Route 5 about 67 kilometers of pure puna to the west until you reach the access to the town. .
