Cuban academic receives important international award

Dr. Hugo Pérez Rojas, Merit Academician of the Academy of Cuban Sciences (ACC), received the prestigious 2023 Spirit of Salam Award, according to official media.

The award was created by the family of Pakistani physicist Mohammad Abdus Salam, Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979, to recognize relevant figures in this scientific field.

On this occasion, along with the Cuban academic, Federico Rosei, from Italy; and Tino Nyawelo, from South Sudan.

After learning the news, the Cuban Academy of Sciences congratulated Dr. Pérez Rojas, “a scientist with his whole life dedicated to Theoretical Physics,” for whom the award represents “a highly deserved honor,” according to Dr. en Physical-Mathematical Sciences Lilliam Álvarez Díaz, secretary of the institution.

When praising the winner, Dr. Álvarez Díaz recalled his status as Principal Investigator of the Institute of Cybernetics, Mathematics and Physics, and founder of its Department of Theoretical Physics, refers a report of the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

This institute “belongs to the Agency for Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies and is a leader in the country in the development of basic and applied research in the fields of Computing, Mathematics and Physics,” the information added.

The award ceremony is usually held in the last week of January, coinciding with the date of Salam’s birth, on the 29th of this month, and a series of conferences held at the International Center that bears his name.

Salam (1926-1996) received the Nobel Prize in Physics “for his work on the electroweak model, a mathematical and conceptual synthesis of electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force,” says the ACN.

The Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics was founded by him in 1964 and is located near the city of Trieste, Italy.

It is sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Italian government, and is dedicated to training high-level scientists in developing countries.
