Panamanian authorities seized 6 million allegedly contraband cigarettes valued at $461,000 dollars near the border area with Costa Rica, reported the National Customs Authority.
The seizure occurred this weekend at a checkpoint near the border between Panama and Costa Rica, and was carried out by customs inspectors and agents of the National Border Service (Senanfront).
The alleged contraband cigarettes were found inside an articulated truck that, according to the documentation presented by its driver, was transporting cups, disposable plates and glue, among other items, supposedly for a distribution company located in the city of David, capital of Chiriquí.
The shipment of cigarettes remained in custody while the corresponding investigations are carried out.
In accordance with the Regulations of the Central American Uniform Customs Code (Recauca), merchandise found without a known owner must be immediately placed under customs control.
