Nicaragua records historic number of remittances from the US in 2022

"Electoral silence" begins in the face of municipal elections in Nicaragua

Nicaragua received at least 3,224.9 million dollars in remittances in 2022, which represents 50% more than the previous year, reported the central bank on Monday in a press release.

Of the total remittances in the year, 76.6% came from the United States, which has been the main destination for migrants fleeing the sociopolitical crisis in Nicaragua, with 2,469.7 million dollars.

The rest is distributed between Costa Rica with 8.6% (275.9 million dollars), Spain, Panama and Canada, according to official data.

In 2021 the country received 2,246 million dollars in total remittances. The Central Bank of Nicaragua recognizes that the dynamism of remittances was supported mainly by the growth of flows from the United States.

According to Manuel Orozco, director of the Migration, Remittances and Development Program at the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington-based think tank, the 50% growth in resources from the United States is a direct reflection of the size of migration in the same period.

“In 2022, more than 350,000 Nicaraguans left, predominantly for the United States,” Orozco assured the voice of americaand indicates that this dynamic will not occur in 2023 due to several factors.

“The main one is that the country has close to 20% of its population that has left the country, and basically 40% of the population is now the workforce, and the rest are dependents,” says Orozco.
